Options-The Keys To Crushing Obstacles

Now that you have defined what your goal(s) are and established the steps needed to get you there. You will find that as you begin to take those steps and navigate your way that you might encounter “Obstacles” at different points.

Tip: How you see and perceive these obstacles will influence how you react to them and ultimately determine how quickly or if you achieve your goals.

Obstacles can come up at any point, either at the beginning or at material points in the journey towards your goal. To effectively deal with Obstacles and ensure they do not stop you from reaching your goal, it is vital we understand what they are and types of obstacles.

What are Obstacles?

The dictionary defines Obstacles as “a thing that blocks one’s way or prevents or hinders progress”.  Common synonyms include bump, difficulty, handicap, hardship, hurdle and etc. From some of the synonyms, we can see some of these can be categorized into an external and internal hindrance. E.g. a bump and a hurdle are external as they are physical/tangible things on your path which you must navigate to continue on the path while a difficulty, handicap, and hardship are internal/personal and mostly non-tangible; they are usually a condition or position of a person.

Common Examples of Obstacles:

  • Finance
  • Skillset
  • Lack of confidence
  • Beliefs
  • Fear
  • Lack of Passion and etc.

Regardless of the obstacle type, the objective is the same and that is to hinder progress. However, understanding the obstacle type is crucial to finding appropriate solutions to Crush it. For example, the solution(s) you will deploy to cross over the hurdle of finance will be different to the solution(s) you will deploy to deal with Fear.

While the solutions are different depending on the obstacle type, the method to finding are the same. This method is called “Options”.

What are Options?

Options are defined as things that are or may be chosen. They are sets of alternatives, choices that you have or explore which helps you to navigate your way out of the obstacles. Options are vital in achieving goals as they keep your dream alive when you have a mindset that you can always find a way. To use Options effectively, there are key questions you must constantly ask yourself anytime you want to navigate an obstacle.

Key Option questions:

What stops me?  –   In other words, what is this obstacle?

What can I do?    –    What options are there for me. This is where you explore your thoughts, become aware and expand your view on possibilities around you.

What else can I do? – After exploring these possibilities, you then take some time to further explore other opportunities that presents

For example, starting a business may require the acquisition of a new skill and definitely finance.  Therefore, asking questions and looking at options such as what new skills do I need? where can I acquire it? How much is it and how do I finance it?

On the other hand, obstacles such as doubt/fear of succeeding, feeling of insecurity such as – I am too such young or too old to start now require a different strategy to dealing with those. The underlying cause of those doubts or fears must be identified and addressed. Often peeling of these layers might lead to the finding of a lack of something, e.g. knowledge, information, other times, it might be a Belief system’ which must also be considered and addressed as most people have beliefs that guide and informs their decisions.

The Option(s) to move past the Obstacle(s) then becomes clearer when the obstacle has been clearly identified.
